Bitcoin
(BTC) No. 18 million is expected to be mined this Friday, US investor and
co-founder of Morgan Creek Digital Assets investment firm Anthony Pompliano
tweeted on October 15.
Only
three million BTC left
Pompliano
also noted that, at this point, there are only three million BTC left to
undermine. The tweet requested raising awareness about the world's best known
cryptocurrency:
This Friday will undermine Bitcoin number 18 million. Only # 3MillionLeft left. Let's make this hashtag trend so that the world can learn about Bitcoin.
This
initiative is not surprising to Pompliano, since he said in CNBC's Squawk Box
in August that more than half of his net worth is in Bitcoin. What hints is
that so far 17,997,150 BTC have been mined - according to the Bitcoin data
website BitcoinBlockHalf - and the upper limit for the amount of BTC that will be
in the system is 21 million.
Bitcoin
block rewards will decrease
As the
amount of coins left to gain by securing the Bitcoin blockchain continues to
decline, the BTC halving also approaches. The event will see the amount of
Bitcoin created with each new block cut in half.
BitcoinBlockHalf
estimates that on May 14, 2020 - the date is provisional, given the
irregularity of the Bitcoin blocking time - the block reward will be reduced
from 12.5 to 6.25 coins. The website also notes that 85.7% of all coins have
already been mined.
As the
amount of coins that have yet to be mined decreases, the competition to get
them also increases. As Cointelegraph reported at the end of September,
the hash rate of the Bitcoin network has surpassed a record of 102 quintillion
hashes for the first time in the history of the currency.
