The students of Medicine at the University of Santiago
have decided to call off the indefinite strike by reaching an agreement with
the representatives of the institution to improve the organization and
conditions of the degree.
In a document agreed between the Rector's Office, the
Deanery and the directors of each department and the representatives of the
Open Medicine Assembly, who are the organizers of the strike, they have agreed
up to 6 key points and other supplementary points. The agreement came Friday
night.
The correction criteria of the test-type exams will be
changed to avoid the so-called double sanction, face-to-face hours will be
reduced and work will be done to avoid overlapping subjects between courses. It
will also seek the decentralization of clinical practices in health centers to
avoid students difficulties in displacement, for which the Deanship undertakes
to seek teachers in all areas of health in Galicia. The students will be able
to propose before the month of January prior to their clinical practices which
centers in particular interest them.
The parties have also committed themselves to the
modification of the curriculum, which will be attended by students, within two
years (although the door is left open for this term to be extended due to bureaucratic
issues).
Another of the key commitments is the review of the
validation process, establishing official deadlines (trying not to be delayed
beyond the end of November) and a reference table, in addition to re-examining
the validation requests received until November 8 to resolve them on December
15 as late.
As for the harassment and disrespectful behaviors
denounced by the students, a specific complaint email will be created and an
annual record of them will be made to be passed to the Quality department.
Covenant on clinical practices
The pact also contains several other agreements. For
example, one of the issues addressed is the organization of clinical practices.
It has been agreed to establish an official welcome day where the student will be
provided with their official identification as a student in practices,
schedules and teachers responsible for each subject, documentation to be
completed and a review by the Preventive Medicine service will be offered.
It has also been agreed to establish criteria for the
evaluation of internships for the next course. On the practices of the 5th and
6th year students, a meeting is scheduled this Monday, November 11 between the
student delegates and the Deanery to address the issue.
Regarding the exams, both parties have agreed that the
rules for the publication of the grades will be followed immediately: the
provisional grades must be published within 15 days and the final grade will be
communicated to the student before the review of the exam. The dates of the
exams, both official and unofficial, will be consulted with the student
representatives and tests will be considered on Saturdays in an exceptional
way. A code of good practice will also be established.
In addition, the university undertakes to publish a
calendar of each subject specifying who is in charge of teaching and what part
of the subject it is from the following semester. It will be published one week
before classes and, exceptionally, one week before the particular class. In
addition, two groups of electives with morning and afternoon schedules will be
established during the next course.
